E-Ware
Cybergoodies for your schools / January 1998

Visualize This
If a picture is worth a thousand words, an interactive mathematical model must be worth at least a million. Waterloo Maple's MathView software lets high school students create live 3D plots and animations as they explore mathematical concepts, visualize complex equations, and illustrate real-world applications. What's more, MathView is web-enabled, so students can upload their live math models to a school's web site, where anyone -- even parents -- can view and interact with their work using the free MathView web browser plug-in.

DirecPC Network Edition
Heavenly Downloads
Is your school district's Internet connection sluggish? Now you can look to the heavens for relief. Just point the DirecPC Network Edition dish at the southern sky, and you're set to slurp down bandwidth from geosynchronous orbit at the rate of 400 Kbps, more than three times as fast as ISDN. It's compatible with Windows NT Server, Novell NetWare, and Linux-based local-area networks, and you can use your existing Internet hookup -- even just a dial-up modem -- for the less critical upstream connection.

Playing in tune, keeping in time, learning how to listen -- these are skills that come from practicing and playing with other musicians. So what's an aspiring Chet Baker to do between orchestra gigs and practices? Answer: Polish your musical chops with SmartMusic Studio, a very hip software-based interactive accompaniment system that actually follows your tempo changes. You'll need a fairly fast Mac or PC, but you're sure to impress those cats at the Blue Note.
