It's tempting to mutter "cool cube" when you first set
your eyes on the new Power Mac G4 Cube. Apple's
latest attempt to marry art and technology, this visually
stunning creation is an 8-inch cube -- virtually a quarter
of the size of most PCs -- with a crystal-clear enclosure.
Yet it does more than impress the eye. The cube houses
a 450 MHz Power PC G4 processor with Velocity Engine that
reaches supercomputer speeds of more than 3 billion calculations
per second. It runs in virtual silence because it uses a
special cooling design that does not require a fan. And
the cube's electronics assembly can be easily taken out
of its enclosure, providing quick access to every major
component and making the addition of memory a relatively
easy task.
The cube also comes with 64 MB of memory, which can be
increased to 1.5 GB; 20 GB of storage; a slot-loading DVD
drive; two FireWire and two USB ports; 10/100BASE-T Ethernet;
and a 56K V.90 modem. In addition, the cube -- retailing
at $1,799 -- comes preinstalled with Apple's iMovie 2, the
next version of consumer digital video editing software.
"The G4 Cube is simply the coolest computer ever," says
Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Well, maybe. But we'll let you be
the judge.
