Voucher Strategy Center

NSBA opposes private school vouchers and tuition tax subsidies and is committed to defeating legislation and initiatives which create these programs and divert taxpayers’ funds from public schools. The goal of the Voucher Strategy Center is to be a clearinghouse and to provide information to help state associations and school board members fight these proposals in their states.  As of late-2012, private school voucher programs have been enacted in the cities of Cleveland, Milwaukee and New Orleans, District of Columbia, Colorado’s Douglas County , as well as statewide in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah. Tuition tax subsidy programs are in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

Vouchers continue to fail to prove their effectiveness in raising student achievement. Research has shown that students attending private schools on vouchers do not perform better in D.C., Cleveland, or Milwaukee. You can find out more about NSBA’s position on vouchers in this Issue Brief and other resources including letters to Capitol Hill.  Please see additional resources on the right side of this page for news articles, research and NSBA’s advocacy toolkit against vouchers.
