Students Show Interpretations Through Moviemaking
Of How One Person Can Make a Difference
The National School Boards Association and Apple Computer Announce Winners
in Annual Student MovieFest Competition
Alexandria, VA – October 12 – The National School Boards Association and Apple Computer have chosen the 2007 winners in their “T+L Technology in the Classroom MovieFest” competition. Winning teams each submitted a 60-second Public Service Announcement answering the thought-provoking question: “How Can One Person Make a Difference?”
There are thousands of political, environmental, economic, educational, health, humanitarian, and animal rights issues that impact society. Students were invited to share their insights, ideas, and inspiration for making positive changes happen in any one area they selected. A winning team was chosen in each of three categories: Grades K-5, Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12.
Each of the winning teams’ films is posted to NSBA’s T+L Conference Website at www.nsba.org/t+l/moviefest . Additionally, each team has been awarded a $1,700 travel stipend to support their participation in producing an onsite production at the 2007 T+L Conference in Nashville, Tenn. The teams’ schools will also be awarded an iMac computer to further their use of technology in the classroom. The competition was accomplished through the support of Apple Inc.
The winners of this year’s competition are:
Grades K-5 Category
“I Have the Power to Change the World!” from team Aztecas, Indian Knoll School in West Chicago, Ill. Team members are Edgar Arechiga, Cristina Barrios, Emmy Bartyzel, Melinda Elmazi, Arley Flores, Kendal Franz, Kiara Hatch, Tiara Hatch, Raquel Loerzel, Sara Naffa, and Anna Yatskewich. Their teacher is Sal Tamayo.
Grades 6-8 Category
“Eva Mozes Kor – Making a Difference” from team B-TV, Lora Batchelor Middle School in Bloomington, Ind. Team members are Caleb Baechtold, Kiel Perez, Nick Jenshak, Criss Beyers, Ollie Skelton, and Troy Sparks. Their teacher is Jeff Rudkin.
Grades 9-12 Category
“Random Acts of Kindness” from team KB Productions, West Chester East High School in West Chester, Pa. Team member is Kimberly Burnick. Her teacher is Ali Bowers.
In “I Have the Power to Change the World!,” team Aztecas illustrates simple ways that all people can help take care of the world. Most importantly, it imparts the message that every human being is responsible for doing these things. In “Eva Mozes Kor – Making a Difference,” team B-TV highlights wise words and ideas from Eva Mozes Kor, a Holocaust survivor and a courageous woman who is working toward eliminating racism, bullying, and
hatred. Lastly, in “Random Acts of Kindness,” Team KB Productions shows the profound ways in which bullying can affect its victims and also the ways in which small acts of kindness can change and even save lives.
