Site Visits to OCPS
Thursday, March 27, 2008
The Council of Urban Boards of Education Site Visit allowed attendees the option to visit one of three schools from the Orange County Public School System. Information on each of the schools visited is below:
Jones High School is a high school turning around. Jones' instructional program focuses on intellectual, social, and emotional development. Through an inquiry approach to curriculum and instruction, Jones High School's faculty and staff concentrate on rigorous academic development, and intellectual rigor. There is simultaneously an emphasis on embedding literacy and numeracy in content areas across the curriculum, to ensure that students develop strong comprehension skills in all subject areas. Student achievement is assessed using multiple measures to guarantee students are learning and progress is captured.
Coupled with the emphasis on intellectual rigor, Jones' post-secondary education preparation includes close faculty counseling, financial aid guidance, visits to college campuses and relationships with college admissions officers, parental information, courses at local colleges and regular assessments of student performance, as well as internships and Community service.
