Serving Native American Students in Urban Schools

American Indian children represent some of the lowest academic performance among public school students. Reasons include poverty, racism, cultural incompatibility, low teacher expectations, high student mobility, lack of American Indian teachers, communication and learning differences, and cultural bias in standardized tests. At a time when public schools are working to improve the achievement of all children, this session explored what educational strategies are working to improve the achievement of American Indian schoolchildren.
