Governance & Training Session

Thursday, September 27, 2007
Dr. Terry Boyd, Board President, Columbus (OH) Public Schools

Dr. Terry Boyd facilitated a discussion about school boards and the policy governance model.  Policy Governance, an integrated board leadership paradigm created by Dr. John Carver, is a model of governance designed to empower boards of directors to fulfill their obligation of accountability for the organizations they govern. The model enables the board to focus on the larger issues, to delegate with clarity, to control management's job, and to rigorously evaluate the accomplishment of the organization.

What CUBE attendees said about this session:

  • "This hits home for my district; a new framework to consider-very valuable in seeing how the details were designed and implemented."
  • "This is what every new school board member needs to hear, not just urban boards."
  • "As a first time attendee, this information was great.  It reinforced my responsibilites as a new board member."
