Successful Urban Students-What's Health Got to do With It?

Successful Urban Students: What’s Health Got to Do with It?

Friday, September 28, 2007

Diane D. Allensworth, Ph.D., Associate Director, Education Partnerships, Division of Partnerships and Strategic Alliances, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta (GA)

Karen Lewis, Project Associate, Tobacco Prevention Project, School Health Prevention Programs, NSBA

Presenters shared significant data to support the fact that the achievement gap in schools and health issues go hand in hand, and discussed how the Centers for Disease Control is responding to the health issues that hinder achievement.  A direct relationship can be drawn between the health of the students, the climate and environment of schools, and achievement, absences, as well as many other factors.

What CUBE attendees said about this session:

  • "Good information and an eye opener to the specific affect of health on education."
  • "Outstanding--before I got on the board, I was a retired nurse--superb."
