The St. Charles Parish Public School System provides high quality educational opportunities to enable its students to become responsible productive citizens and enthusiastic life-long learners. Governed by an eight member School Board, the belief is that educating our youth is a shared responsibility of the schools, students, families, staff, school board members, local government agencies, higher education and the business community. There is a commitment from stakeholders to help all students become life-long learners.
The district, accredited by AdvancED as a quality schools system, serves approximately 10,000 students in 17 schools (11 elementary, 4 middle, 2 high). As the parish’s largest employer, the district employees over 814 teachers and administrators along with 945 support staff who are responsible for accomplishing the mission of the school district. Touting a student-teacher ratio at 20:1, these expert instructors provide relevant, exciting and engaging curriculum which challenge our students to reach their maximum potential.
Technology in St. Charles Parish Public Schools supports and is integrated into all aspects of the Board’s Strategic Action Plan. This allows for sustainability and continuous funding for technology. St. Charles Parish Public Schools has a student to computer ratio of 2.3 to 1 which includes a one-to-one program at the Satellite Center. The Satellite Center provides opportunity for the students to explore career pathways such as engineering, culinary arts, multi-media, broadcasting and health sciences. The district has established criteria for model classrooms that support the district’s core business of Teaching and Learning. Teachers integrate technology tools such as interactive white boards, simulations, and web 2.0 tools into the classroom. The use of assessment data management systems provide information that drives instruction and meets students needs. Other technologies such as Parent Portal and Connect-ED are used to engage parents and keep them informed. The district has a fiscally sound obsolescence plan that helps maintain current technologies throughout the district. Exploring new ways to use technologies for teaching and learning, such as the Bring Your Own Technologies Pilot Program, is on the horizon for the 2011-2012 school year.
