Title:  MIT Fab Labs Offers a New Way to Explore and Apply STEM
Date:  Wednesday, January 23, 2013
Time:  3:00 PM - 4:00 PM EST

So is a Fab Lab fabulous? They think so in Minnesota! Learn how a small district became one of the first public school districts in the country to join over 140 international sites operating state-of-the art fabrication laboratories, or Fab Labs. Although there is little disagreement about the need to ramp up a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), many districts are searching for strategies to effectively accomplish that goal. MIT’s Fab Labs offer one alternative and gets high marks for content, student engagement, and increased achievement.  When MIT professor Neil Gershenfeld addressed NSBA’s 2005 T+L Conference, his vision of students using 3-D  printers to move their ideas from sketches to reality in Fab Labs sounded like science fiction. Now it’s a reality. Join a team from Mahtomedi School District to hear the story of their Fab Lab -  from the motivation for its creation to how it is funded and what students are accomplishing. See what it would take to put a Fab Lab in your district’s future!
